We have lots of interesting speakers lined up for 2012 and our first will be Wouter Holleman who will give us a talk entitled “A brief trip to East New Britain to find some really small fishes”. East New Britain is a province of Papua New Guinea. The date is the 26 January, the venue is, as usual, the Mullins Room at St Andrew’s Prep and the time is 10.00 am.
On 26 May 2011 at 10.00 am Marguerite Poland will talk to us about Nguni Cattle. The meeting will be held in the Mullins Room at St Andrew’s Prep.
On 11 May Nic Stavrakis will take us on a 2 hour geological tour along the Port Elizabeth/East London road.
Tim Radloff will give another 5 week course on the rise of the piano from humble beginnings. This will be held in the Mullins Room at Prep starting at 2.30 pm on 3 May, and every following Tuesday, ending on 31 May.
There will be no general meeting in April.
On Thursday 31 March 2011 Jenny Raiment will talk to us in the Mullins Room, St Andrew’s Prep, at 10.00 am. The subject of her talk will be hypnotherapy. After suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for which her doctors could find no cure she turned to hypnotherapy. This was of so much help that she decided to study at the South African Institute of Hypnotherapy so that she could pass on her knowledge to other sufferers.
On Thursday 24 February 2011 Derrick Newson will give us an illustrated talk on ‘The Gardens of China’. This will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting. Meet in the Mullins room at St Andrew’s Prep at 10.00 am.
On Thursday 27 January 2011 our guest speaker will be Professor Allon Poole who spent time in Antarctica doing research. He will tell us about his work, the difficulties of living and working in such an extreme climate, and entertain us with anecdotes and incidents experienced whilst there.
Our new venue is the Mullins Room at St Andrews Prep. Enter the main red brick building, walk through the entrance hall and turn right. Turn left at the end of the passage and go out into a cobbled/brick paved area. Turn right and follow the signs marked “Mullins”.
On Thursday 25 November Dario Broccardo, a music teacher at Kingswood and who was a percussionist in the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, will give us a talk entitled Things that go Clash, Bang and Ping in an Orchestra. Meet at the Library Hall at 10.00 am
Malcolm Hacksley will be offering a six week course on etymology, dealing with the origin and history of words. The first three sessions will take place this year on Wednesday 17, and 24 November and Wednesday 1 December from 10.00 am to 11.00 am. The venue will be the Library Hall. The following three sessions will be held next year.
